Chelsea have been surprisingly linked with Leicester midfielder Danny Drinkwater, Sky Sports report that The Blues are interested and could make an approach.

The 27-year old England International has become the name on every Chelsea fans lips over night, creating a lot of shock and anger amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Although I agree that the player is not Chelsea standard and perhaps does not represent a good statement going forward, today I am here to play devil’s advocate and provide a positive spin on it. Someone has to, right?

Antonio Conte has always preferred to have the robust types within his squad, Drinkwater can certainly be described as that. He wins a lot of tackles, breaks up play well and will certainly put himself about. I believe Conte appreciates that in a player.

Secondly, he would NOT be a replacement for Nemanja Matic as I have seen many state. Tiemoue Bakayoko was that choice. He would be someone to fill the squad void left by Nathaniel Chalobah. He would be bought in as a squad player, someone to do a job, fill in where required and put in a shift when needed to grind out a win for example.

He will also help our forever thinning home grown quota, which everyone knows we lack.

I also believe Conte likes his passion and leadership, with John Terry leaving there is a void left for a gutsy type flair player who will be vocal on the pitch and lead. Drinkwater will do that.

We can’t forget it was his partnership that successfully battled through the Premier League with N’Golo Kante to lift the Trophy two seasons ago. They built up a good rapport together and were pinnacle to Leicester’s Title winning side.

Drinkwater has an all round ability to his game, he can be creative and intelligent going forward, whilst being a really good defensive midfielder. A good old fashioned box-to-box type player. I do feel that many do under rate him.

Before you all start abusing me, let me state again that I do agree with you all, this is not the calibre of player the Club should be signing. But for a squad player he will do an excellent job. Yes we lost Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek who both could do that job, but they also both didn’t want to stay, they wanted first team football. So as a backup option, it’s not as bad as you all claim.

  1. Good perspective. I admire Drinkwater too, and as a squad player as you put it, especially now that we have a busy schedule ahead, he’d make a good card to have in our bag. But hopefully he shouldn’t cost anything above 30mil.

(I don’t know whether I should put this here or not but: the article would read more professional and better if you’d limit the use of the first person in your commentary. Otherwise yours is a good unique perspective.
