The reigning Premier League champions are getting ready to defend their English title in 8 days time, but as the Stamford Bridge faithful rightly point out, the squad is dangerously thin.

The Blues are widely reported to be adding at least 4 more players to the squad before the transfer window closes in 28 days time, with some reports suggesting a deal for one player will even get done before the Community Shield match against Arsenal on Sunday. The latter though, looking highly unlikely.

I have noticed the discontent throughout from Chelsea fans when certain players are being mentioned with the Club. But what people are failing to realise here, is the Club are not looking for first team starters. We won’t see marquee signings arriving now.

Chelsea need strength in depth and they seek experience. Do you honestly think that a Marco Veratti (just for example) is going to come to Chelsea now? Tiemoue Bakayoko was signed as the replacement for Nemanja Matic. N’golo Kante was the major signing the year before, do you think either of them, Cesc Fabregas or Veratti would be happy competing on the bench? No, is the answer to that.

Chelsea want replacements for Nathaniel Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek with the added extra of a couple more with Champions League football this season. Diego Costa has already been replaced as was John Terry.

The only areas we could see marquee arrivals between now and the end of the window is the wing backs, those could definitely be improved, particularly on the left. So we could still yet see an Alex Sandro arrive, for example.

David Luiz was also only signed last year, and with the arrival of Antonio Rudiger neither of these two will be happy sitting the bench, nor will Cesar Azpilicueta or Gary Cahill, who love it or hate it has just been named the new Club Captain. So definitely don’t expect any big name arrivals throughout the centre of the pitch.

We will however, see more midfielders and attackers arrive as squad players competing for a place in the starting line up. Players such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ross Barkely, Danny Drinkwater, Ryan Bertrand, Fernando Llorente just a few names who are continuously linked at the moment. They wouldn’t be arriving to IMPROVE the team as such, they’d be arriving to improve the SQUAD and provide much needed competition and numbers.

We have to remember, this isn’t Football Manager…
