Dean Jones, a football insider for Bleacher Report has confirmed that Chelsea’s pursuit of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will take another turn. Talks between Arsenal and Chelsea concerning the 25-year-old English versatile midfielder will be ongoing throughout the week and another bid from Chelsea is on the way. The bid expected will be around the £40 million mark.
Chelsea put in a bid earlier in the window, close to £30 million, for the Arsenal player which was rebuffed swiftly by the North London outfit. Arsenal’s stance is that the player is not for sale and have offered Oxlade-Chamberlain a new four-year contract which is designed to stave off any approach from Chelsea and other interested parties. Liverpool and Manchester City have shown interest in Chamberlain at some point during the window. If Chamberlain agreed to Arsenal’s offer, he would double his wages to £125,000 per week.
It is a financial risk for Arsenal should Oxlade-Chamberlain again reject Arsenal’s improved new contract proposal. Chamberlain joins what looks like an endless list of Arsenal players in the last year of the contract. From January 2018, Chamberlain along with Sanchez, Ozil, Cazorla and Jack Wilshere could negotiate with other clubs and sign pre-contract agreements which would commence from July 1st. Arsenal would potentially miss out in excess of £40 million should he see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal.
Alex would be a welcome addition at Chelsea, primarily due to his versatility and home-grown status. He can play a variety of roles and positions: across the midfield, winger and as seen frequently this season, in the wing-back role. Chamberlain is more suited to the right-wing back role and would provide stern competition with Victor Moses should he move to Chelsea. Since Alex is home-grown, the signing is appealing to the Club in order to fulfil UEFA Champions League quotas. Home-grown additions are necessary following the permanent departures of Nathaniel Chalobah (£7 million deal to Watford), Nathan Ake (£20 million to Bournemouth), Asmir Begovic (£10 million to Bournemouth) and the loan departures of Loftus-Cheek, Baker and Abraham to name a few.
Expect the Chamberlain saga to rumble on throughout the remainder of the window with only 10 days left. Keep checking the Absolute Chelsea website and social media pages for the latest news.
