Today, November 6th, Chelsea FC announced that Michael Emenalo has resigned as Technical Director at the Club
Michael Emenalo joined Chelsea in 2007. After coaching and scouting for 4 years, he was promoted to technical director in 2011. Emenalo’s role has been debated countlessly on social media but what did Emenalo’s role actually involve? The Nigerian was involved in the scouting network. It was through the extensive scouting network how we recruited the likes of Courtois, Christensen, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Salah for example. Courtois and Christensen feature within the first-team but the likes of De Bruyne, Lukaku and Salah have departed and shone at Chelsea’s expense.
Emenalo has been heavily involved in the Youth Team winning many trophies and some players who even won the U-17 World Cup with England. Whether he was most responsible for underwhelming transfer activity in the most recent seasons is debatable but his departure may represent a step-back instead of a victory for Conte.
Announcing his decision, Emenalo said: ‘This has been a very difficult decision to make, but one I believe is right for both myself and my family, and the club. I have had the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented people in the world of sport over the past 10 years, and I will depart incredibly proud of the achievements we have made. I wish Chelsea every success and look forward to following the club’s future triumphs from afar.’
