In Antonio Conte’s first season in charge in England, he picked up the Premier League, and reached the final of the FA Cup. Considering he took over a side who finished tenth in the league the previous year, that is some achievement.
But now the Chelsea manager is frustrated that is achievements in England are being overshadowed by constant speculation over the security of his job, but also what he has accomplished in his 18 months here at Chelsea.
“Every day there is speculation about my future. It’s not right because I think I deserve a bit of respect for what I did last season, for what I am doing this season.
“To read every week: ‘Next season the club contacts this coach or this coach’ – for me this is not a problem, but it can create problems with the players because the players believe we could [drift] apart.
“I think last season we did a fantastic job but this job is continuing this season. We are trying to change the average age of our team.
“I think for a club like Chelsea it is very important to start to do this, if you want to create a new base and face the future with confidence.”
However Chelsea at this stage last season were on 43 points, they are only five points behind that now. It clearly shows what a fantastic job Pep Guardiola is doing with Manchester City who sit 14 points ahead of the Blues.
Not many can say they have won silverware in their first year in a managerial role, something which has been forgotten about clearly.
