Barcelona have made a request to La Liga as they explore the possibility of bringing Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to the club, according to reports.

The 33-year-old only departed Spain on Deadline Day last summer after Chelsea agreed a £10 million plus Marcos Alonso deal for Aubameyang.

But the Gabon international’s switch to Stamford Bridge hasn’t worked out the way any of the parties would have hoped it would. He has only scored three times for Chelsea, all of which came back in October against AC Milan and Crystal Palace.

Aubameyang has a two-year contract at the club but it looks increasingly likely that he won’t stay out the club for the whole duration of his deal.

His future is restricted over what he is currently able to do. Due to already registering for two clubs – Barcelona and Chelsea – this season, he is unable to join a third club amid a potential January exit.

However, if he were to leave Chelsea this month he can return to Barcelona should they wish to bring him back to the Camp Nou, although Atletico have been attributed with interest also.

Following Joao Felix’s loan move to Chelsea, Atletico Madrid are eyeing up Memphis Depay to temporarily replace the 23-year-old, leaving space for Barcelona to make a swoop for Aubameyang if they wanted to.

It’s reported in Spain by Gerard Romero that Barcelona are doing exactly that. They have spoken to La Liga about the possibility of re-signing Aubameyang this month and his salary space should Depay, or Franck Kessie, leave.

Aubameyang is claimed to be ready to leave Chelsea and Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez didn’t rule out a return for the forward entirely on Friday.

He said: “We are happy with the squad. In principle, there will be no changes. There has been no meeting.”

On Depay, Xavi added: “We do not know anything. We will see what happens. I told the board that I’d be happy if the squad remains as it is.”

Aubameyang is set to return to the Chelsea side to face Fulham on Thursday after missing the 4-0 defeat to Man City with a tight back.
