Ben Chilwell has sent a strong message to his Chelsea teammates after they were defeated by bottom of the table Southampton.

After a better performance in Germany on Wednesday night ended in a 1-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund following an error at the corner to allow Karim Adeyemi to run through on goal and round Kepa Arrizabalaga, Chelsea desperately needed a win this weekend.

Southampton came to the capital having just sacked Nathan Jones and sitting at the foot of the table. Ruben Selles took temporary charge and a James Ward-Prowse free-kick in first half stoppage time was enough to inflict more misery and pressure on the Blues.

A whole host of changes were made as Chelsea switched back to domestic duty. Ben Chilwell retained his place at left-back as he continued his return to full fitness.

But with Chelsea conceding and failing to score a goal, which sees them now scoring just 23 from their 23 Premier League games, their problems are becoming alarming as they play out the second part of the season.

There was zero improvement from Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and the performance was felt by the supporters who booed the team off at both half and full time.

“After a 1-0 defeat at home, any criticism you get is understandable,” responded Potter to the criticism.

Chilwell offered an honest assessment at full-time, admitting that it’s not been good enough and the team have to take responsibility to turn it around.

The 26-year-old told BBC Match of the Day: “It’s not good enough. We need to win these games.

“It’s a pretty flat dressing room at the moment. The only people that can turn it around is ourselves.”

Chelsea are still sticking by Potter despite the club winning just two of their last 17 games in all competitions.

The Blues will be looking to produce a big result in their next fixture which comes away against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, their form doesn’t back them to get a win having not won on the road in the Premier League since October 2022.
