Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach.

The 51-year-old will officially take over at Stamford Bridge from July 1 after penning an initial two-year contract at Chelsea, with a club option of a further year.

Pochettino, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain, arrives back in the English capital after leaving November 2019 and becomes the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership’s third permanent head coach – after Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter – since their £4.25 billion takeover in May 2022.

He has penned a deal in west London until 2026 and is joined by four of his backroom staff. They are: Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and son Sebastiano Pochettino.

On his appointment, owners Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali, José E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss said: “The sporting team conducted a diligent and thoughtful process that the Board is proud of. We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.”

Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, added: “Mauricio’s experience, standards of excellence, leadership qualities and character will serve Chelsea Football Club well as we move forward.  He is a winning coach, who has worked at the highest levels, in multiple leagues and languages. His ethos, tactical approach and commitment to development all made him the exceptional candidate.”
