Chelsea are ready to reignite their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer after a failed approach in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The 25-year-old joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022, in a deal worth around £40 million, and he has shone since making the switch to the Premier League.

Guimaraes’ current deal in the north east runs until the summer of 2026.

He has played 26 times for Newcastle this season and is a pivotal part of Eddie Howe’s side, contributing four goals and three assists this term in all competitions.

As a result of the Brazil international’s impressive performances for the Magpies, who suffered Carabao Cup final heartbreak last month at Wembley, interest in Guimaraes has started to surface from top clubs across Europe.

Real Madrid have previously been interested in the midfielder, while Paris Saint-Germain are ‘keen’, as reported by Luke Edwards of the Daily Telegraph, and are ‘monitoring the situation’.

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola are also admirers of Guimaraes, however Newcastle have no intention of letting him go and are reportedly close to agreeing a new long-term contract to fend off any interest.

It’s stated that the new deal will add a further 12 months onto his deal which currently expires in 2026 and it’ll make Guimaraes ‘one of the club’s highest earners’. It’s expected to be confirmed before the end of the season.

However, Chelsea‘s interest has also been reported in the Daily Telegraph. It’s claimed the Blues, who spent in excess of £300 million in the January window, ‘inquired’ to Newcastle about the availability of Guimaraes but the ‘conversation ended almost as soon as it started’.

Chelsea haven’t given up on trying to sign Guimaraes though. They are suggested to be ‘likely to be back again’. this summer and could lodge a bid to bolster their midfield. Interest remains in West Ham’s Declan Rice and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Newcastle’s valuation of Guimaraes is staggering and if he is to leave the club, it’ll take a fee of more than £100 million, according to the report.

Guimaraes has already outlined his ambitions of winning the Premier League and playing in the Champions League. Right now though, he wants to try to do that with Newcastle.

At the FWA North East Awards earlier this week, as quoted by the Daily Telegraph, he said: “My dream while I’m at Newcastle, because I know what it would mean for the fans, is to win the Premier League title here.

“That is my ambition with the club, plus to play in the Champions League. We need to dream big things because the club deserves it, the fans deserve a title. Fans are growing up having never seen Newcastle become champions and my goal while I’m here is to help the club win that title.”
