Graham Potter has broken his silence on Chelsea’s club record signing Enzo Fernandez.

After a whole month, Chelsea managed to complete a January deal to sign the 22-year-old from Benfica for a club and British record of £106.8 million.

Fernandez, who has signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract until June 2031, has decided to take the number five shirt at Stamford Bridge and expressed his happiness to join the project in the capital.

“I am grateful to Chelsea and its ownership for doing everything they could to make me a part of this project,” Fernandez told the official Chelsea website upon his arrival after landing in England on Wednesday.

“I’m happy and excited to join the Pride of London, to play in the best league in the world and to compete for the biggest trophies.

“I can’t wait to play in front of our fans and help my teammates on and off the pitch.”

Fernandez became Chelsea’s eighth and final signing of the January window in a frantic month for the Blues, who also acquired David Datro Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and Malo Gusto (loaned back to Lyon for rest of season).

Potter has been given a welcomed new lease of life at Chelsea. The injury problems are starting to ease and fresh faces have boosted the morale at the club.

Ahead of their Premier League fixture against Fulham on Friday night at Stamford Bridge, Potter spoke for the first time on Chelsea’s new arrival, Fernandez.

“I couldn’t do anything to change anything. I found out when it was done. I’m very, very pleased because he’s a fantastic player,” said Potter.

He added on a potential debut versus Fulham: “We’ll see, we need to go through the paperwork to get the clearance.

“My Spanish isn’t great, his English isn’t great, so we’ll get there. Impressive young man.”
