Carney Chukwuemeka is staking his claim under Graham Potter as he eyes a regular spot in the side, according to reports.

The 19-year-old signed for £20 million in the summer on a six-year contract from Aston Villa, indicating that the new owners’ vision of bringing in promising young talent was well underway.

Chukwuemeka’s role remained unclear when he joined, but he has since cemented his place in the first-team and has already made his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

He has made three appearances for Chelsea this term and will be hoping to add to his tally once the season resumes next week following the World Cup break.

During the weeks Chelsea were not in action, Chukwuemeka has been recovering from injury and is on his way to being available to be selected again after a positive update from Graham Potter.

He missed Chelsea’s final three games, which all ended in defeat, prior to the break.

Chukwuemeka did travel out to Abu Dhabi with the rest of the first-team for warm-weather training to continue his recovery and it appears he has caught the eye of the head coach.

As reported by football.london, Potter has been ‘mightily impressed’ with Chukwuemeka during the World Cup break despite not playing.

That will do his chances of getting more game time this season no harm at all. Chukwuemeka has already outlined his plans for next year, including getting his Champions League debut.

“In 2023, I want to kick on and break into the team.

To make my Champions League debut. To keep my confidence high. To build on my past performances.”

Chukwuemeka continued: “And as much as it was my dream to play for Chelsea, it’s also my dream to play for my country: England.

“I’ve set myself this one goal: to play at EURO 2024. Obviously, I’ve got to keep on working hard, and then we’ll see what happens.”
