Erik ten Hag has offered his thoughts on Hakim Ziyech’s Chelsea future after opening up on his “bond for life” with the former Ajax star.

Ziyech and Ten Hag were spotted in conversation post-match on Thursday night after Manchester United defeated Chelsea 4-1 at Old Trafford, which saw the Reds secure Champions League qualification.

The pair spent time together at Ajax when Ten Hag managed the Eredivisie side, who went onto win the league title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League back in 2019, where they came seconds away from making the final but were denied by a stoppage time goal from Tottenham’s Lucas Moura.

Ten Hag was asked by Viaplay about the conversation with Ziyech as they left the pitch, and replied: “That is between Hakim and me. We have experienced a lot together, beautiful things. There is a bond for life.”

Ziyech’s future in west London is uncertain. Chelsea are looking to overhaul the squad this summer and the Moroccan is set to be one of many who will be allowed to find a new club.

The 30-year-old has been restricted of game time this season, making 30 appearances in all competitions. He has featured in five of the last 13 Premier League matches, all of which have come from the bench.

He was moments from departing on loan in January to Paris Saint-Germain on loan until the end of the season, but due to an administrative error the switch fell through and Ziyech was forced to head back to England in disappointment to see out the season with the Blues.

Another attempt at leaving this summer will likely come and Ten Hag, his former boss, was also asked about the winger’s future and believes he is too good to be sitting on the bench for large parts of the season.

Ten Hag added: “He has to play every week. A footballer like that, in the prime of his life, must be on the pitch.”
