Chelsea remain ‘optimistic’ of appointing Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s next head coach, according to reports.

The 51-year-old has held several rounds of talks with Chelsea over the head coach vacancy to succeed Graham Potter and become the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s third permanent head coach.

A meeting was held by the Chelsea hierarchy in Los Angeles last weekend to come to a decision over whether or not to offer Pochettino a contract.

Now it appears the club have gone ahead with offering the Argentine a deal, as reported by Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph who states that Chelsea are now ‘negotiating the final details’ of the contract before an agreement can be reached and the appointment can be be confirmed.

Chelsea are claimed to be ‘optimistic’ over getting a deal over the line, while Pochettino is ‘excited’ by the challenge of taking the job at Stamford Bridge despite the disappointing 2022/23 campaign.

Caretaker boss Frank Lampard, who is in charge until the end of the season, was unable to offer any update on Friday during his pre-AFC Bournemouth press conference on the managerial search. He said: “(I’ve been told) nothing.”

After a season to forget, which is almost over, Chelsea are looking to avoid a repeat next campaign and work is already being done to plan ahead. The squad will be trimmed in the summer transfer window, while transfer targets, including Inter Milan’s Andre Onana, are being sought out.

Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Wednesday, co-controlling owner Todd Boehly insisted Chelsea will eventually get things right amid continued frustrations following the Blues’ current position of 12th in the Premier League.

“The fans are demanding and they want to win,” said Boehly. “We get that, we want to win. Our view though is that this is a long term project, and we’re committed to the long term, and we very much believe that we’re going to figure it out.

“We’ve got the best league in the world, we’ve got what I think is the top city in the world, and we’ve got an unbelievable location in the top city in the world. That’s what I think. It’s the most strategically located city in the world. You can get anywhere from London quickly.”
