Enzo Fernandez’s shirt was in high demand on Thursday night after Argentina’s friendly against Panama.

The 22-year-old, who won the World Cup with his country at the end of 2022 in Qatar, has had his life changed in the last year. He has gone from River Plate to Benfica, to winning the World Cup, to then finalising a British record £106.8 million transfer to Chelsea during the January transfer window.

“I’ll always feel grateful to Benfica,” said Fernandez last month. “They’ve opened the doors of Europe to me. I feel very thankful for what the club’s done for me, with the directors, with my team-mates. They’ve put in a lot of trust in me. Not to mention the technical staff, who have given me loads of support and love ever since I landed there.

“The city’s great! I’ve been very happy there. Now I’m here, playing for Chelsea, and I feel equally grateful for the confidence they put in me. They’re great, and I’m happy.”

He added: “I’ve always longed to play in the Premier League. Chelsea has given me the opportunity to play here, and I feel grateful for their trust. I love everything about the club, I’m so happy with my teammates and technical staff.

“Honestly, ever since I landed here I felt at home. I’ll always try to give it my all along with my teammates to achieve the greatest things for Chelsea.

“The World Cup is like reaching the sky! For me, that’s the everlasting glory. But one needs to keep the focus and self-belief.

“I’ll always try to have confidence in us, to win everything possible and keep evolving as a player. Clinching titles is the main objective, as well as enjoying football.”

Fernandez’s headed off to Argentina for international duty during March for their friendlies against Panama and Curaçao.

Following Argentina’s 2-0 win against Panama on Thursday night, which saw Thiago Almada and Lionel Messi net in the friendly win, the visitors wanted to get hold of players’ shirts at the full-time whistle.

Fernandez was in high demand and he was pictured being the subject of three Panama players wanting his shirt.

After the three players fought for the midfielder’s number 24 shirt, how was it decided who got his shirt?

Argentina fan Agustin revealed they played Rock-Paper-Scissors in order to see who would receive the Chelsea star’s shirt at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.

Fernandez had another bright performance as he continued his impressive form.

Statistics vs. Panama:

  • Completed more passes (57/60), more accurate long balls (7/9) and more successful ball recoveries (4) than any other player for Argentina against Panama inside the first 45 minutes
