Chelsea are to welcome back Diego Moreira from his Lyon spell in the next 24 hours, according to reports.

It was confirmed by reports in France that Lyon intended to end the loan spell of Moreira’s this month, cutting short his stay by half a season.

Moreira joined in the closing stages of the summer transfer window after featuring for Chelsea in their Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon on August 30.

However, his loan move, after joining from Benfica on a free transfer, to Lyon hasn’t quite worked out for the 21-year-old.

The Portugal youngster has struggled for Lyon this term, featuring just seven times in Ligue 1 -failing to register a goal or an assist.

Lyon have made the decision to let Moreira return to Chelsea, which will see him remain with the Blues until the summer. This is due to him already playing for two clubs this term and rules not allowing him to feature for a third.

Moreira’s options are limited; he can either drop down to the Under-21s and play Premier League 2 football, where he has already made three appearances this term, or stick and train with Mauricio Pochettino‘s first team squad.

His return to Chelsea is imminent. As reported by Fabrice Hawkins, Moreira missed training on Sunday and is expected back in London within the next 24 hours, with official confirmation likely to follow shortly after.

Chelsea have already recalled three players from their loan spells this month. David Datro Fofana returned from Union Berlin, before heading to Burnley for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, Andrey Santos departed from Nottingham Forest and Chelsea exercised the option to bring Cesare Casadei back from his Leicester City loan spell early.
