Christopher Nkunku’s Chelsea announcement is imminent, according to reports, with the expected timeline now revealed.

The 25-year-old will make the switch from RB Leipzig to Stamford Bridge next month after a deal was agreed with Chelsea prior to the World Cup.

Confirmation of Nkunku’s transfer, which will be in excess of his £52.7 million release clause, has been delayed until the end of the season ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, which will see him work under Mauricio Pochettino, and the reason for the delay has been explained.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, an announcement was pushed back to allow little to no speculation around the France international and both clubs, allowing them to focus on their respective campaigns.

Nkunku is currently on international duty with France as they prepare to face Greece and Gibraltar in the EURO 2024 qualifiers.

He is set to sign a long-term contract in west London from July 1 and Fabrizio Romano states confirmation will only be made once France and Nkunku’s fixtures have concluded.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, who is also French, offered his verdict on the forward’s potential arrival, telling Telefoot: “I hope he comes and plays for us. He would be a very good signing.”

Nkunku remained coy on the Chelsea transfer, which is now a worst-kept transfer secret, after being asked questions about his future. He said: “I am focused on gathering with Les Bleus. Everything that happens after, we will have time to think.”

The deal to bring Nkunku to the English capital is done. It’s just a case of remaining patient until it’s made official by the club.
