Ian Maatsen’s loan departure to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the season has been confirmed following Chelsea’s double loan decision regarding Jamie Cumming and David Datro Fofana.

Prior to joining Dortmund on loan until the summer, Maatsen has put pen to paper on a new contract at Chelsea until June 2026.

Despite excelling in pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino, the 21-year-old has been limited to 376 minutes in all competitions this season and a decision has been made for the versatile youngster to head out on loan.

Dortmund, who also confirmed the loan signing of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, are currently fifth in the Bundesliga and 15 points adrift of leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

On making the temporary switch to Germany, Maatsen said: “Borussia Dortmund tried hard to find me. I’ve been following BVB and its fans for a long time and was even at the Champions League game in Manchester in autumn 2022 to see the team live on the pitch.

“I’m very happy that it’s now the loan worked out. I promise that I will give everything for the team’s success and I’m really looking forward to the Yellow Wall.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea confirmed their decision to recall striker David Datro Fofana from his loan spell at Union Berlin.

Sevilla were interested in his loan signature this month, however with all of Chelsea’s international loan slots filled following Maatsen’s move, Burnley have swooped in and are set to land Fofana until the end of the season.

Goalkeeper Jamie Cumming’s loan switch to Oxford United until the end of the season was confirmed, with the 24-year-old eligible to face Carlisle on Saturday.

On his switch, Cumming said: “I knew there was a possibility of coming here after they had played the two cup games.

“They’ve got a really strong team who are up there challenging in the play-off places, and the facilities at the Training Ground are great.

“After speaking with the gaffer, it was an easy decision to make the move.”
