Chelsea will be without at least 10 players when they face Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Mauricio Pochettino is aiming to complete a job Chelsea have been unsuccessful at over the last ten years – to beat Man United at Old Trafford. Their last win away from home against the Red Devils came in May 2013. Their last victory against United came in November 2017.

After beating Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, Chelsea are in confident mood for the midweek trip to the north west. However, Pochettino will have to deal with at least ten absentees.

Nine players miss out through injury, with the confirmed list detailed by Chelsea in their pre-game injury report.

  • Romeo Lavia – progressing with the reconditioning phase of his rehabilitation.
  • Christopher Nkunku – progressing with the reconditioning phase of his rehabilitation.
  • Trevoh Chalobah – continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme.
  • Ben Chilwell – continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme.
  • Carney Chukwuemeka – continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme.
  • Wesley Fofana – continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme.
  • Malo Gusto – continuing to undergo his rehabilitation programme.
  • Noni Madueke – started rehabilitation programme.
  • Lesley Ugochukwu – undergoing his rehabilitation programme.

Conor Gallagher will also miss Wednesday night’s clash through suspension after he picked up two yellow cards in the first half against Brighton and, therefore, was subsequently dismissed.

Why are some players missing?

Pochettino offered updates on Romeo Lavia and Christopher Nkunku, as well as the latest on the setbacks for Lesley Ugochukwu and Noni Madueke.

On Nkunku, Pochettino said: “Hope soon. He is not involved (against Man United). It’s about assessing day by day. Sometimes we become excited when we see on the pitch and we want to have the player as soon as possible but I think we need to be careful and of course when he is ready he is going to be really strong.”

On Lavia, Pochettino added: “Romeo is doing well also but like Christopher is not going to be involved.”

On Ugochukwu and Madueke, Pochettino concluded: “Lesley feels something this week, a minor injury.

“Noni post-match, after Brighton also, minor problems hope that soon they will be available to train and available for the team.”
