Chelsea have had a large squad this season which current head Graham Potter has had to contend, navigate and manage through over the course of the 2022/23 campaign so far.

It’s been a difficult season for Chelsea who have had a lot of challenges to overcome following significant change at Stamford Bridge since the takeover of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership last May.

A change in ownership, a change in manager mid-season, a revamped structure of personnel, lots of new signings, lots of injuries, and mounting pressure from supporters have made it a campaign which has had the spotlight firmly on the Blues.

It has affected results on the pitch. Chelsea currently find themselves in 10th place in the Premier League, out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but they remain in the Champions League with a last-eight tie against Real Madrid awaiting the two-time winners next month.

Chelsea’s squad, which has exceeded 30, has made it difficult to Potter to manage, and the 47-year-old acknowledged the issue last month.

He said: “There are challenges when you’ve got that many players. There are challenges in terms of what role they play because most players want to play. They want to play, be on the pitch and help the team. When they are not, it is a challenge for lots of reasons at this club.

“When you go through a period of transition and the steps we’ve gone through then there are going to be periods when it is going to be tougher than you ideally want – it’s not optimal.

“I am not complaining about it and I have to do my best to support and manage the club. Step by step I want to put the team in a better place than when I arrived.”

Kai Havertz is Chelsea’s most capped player; Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and Marc Cucurella aren’t far behind, with a whole host with over 25 appearances for the club this term.
