Mauricio Pochettino has revealed when he will select his new Chelsea captain for the 2023/24 season following Cesar Azpilicueta’s exit.

Azpilicueta’s departure to Atletico Madrid has seen Chelsea no longer have a club captain and Pochettino will now need to select who his next designated leader is in the dressing room.

Several names have been put into the hat. Thiago Silva, who turns 39 in September, is the frontrunner for the captaincy due to his experience and previous captaincy roles at AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Meanwhile, Chelsea academy graduate Reece James is another option who is likely to be under consideration.

Trevoh Chalobah was selected as the captain for the Wrexham pre-season clash in midweek, which saw Chelsea come out 5-0 winners in North Carolina.

Ahead of their Premier League Summer Series tournament this month, Pochettino was asked prior to their opener against Brighton & Hove Albion about whether or not he had made a decision yet on the captaincy situation.

Pochettino remained coy, telling reporters: “I’m not going to name until before the Liverpool game.

“I need to see the reaction, how they behave, how they react. It’s a time to assess everyone and see what is going on and to see who will be in the squad.

“It is not really important. For some people, yes. Now it is important to assess and be right in the decision.”

Pochettino’s full focus is getting his squad fully prepared for the new season that awaits as he eyes to get Chelsea back to where they believe they belong.

He concluded: “We’re working on preparing for the next year, focused on our objectives and preparing a base for next season. We want Chelsea to get back to where it belongs and want it to be.”
