Player Ratings: Chelsea 3-0 Luton | Premier League

Chelsea swept Luton Town aside with ease in a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues earned their first victory of the Premier League season as they took on Rob Edwards’ newly promoted Hatters.

The hosts came out the gates quickest and managed to establish a firm grasp on the contest, their dominance was rewarded when Raheem Sterling danced his way through the defence and guided an effort into the bottom left corner in the 17th minute.

Chelsea’s pace slowed up as the first half continued, few chances fell to either side and the Blues had just a one goal lead at the interval.

Chelsea found their groove again in the second 45, they created some good chances, with Enzo Fernandez striking the post, eventually, in the 68th minute, Sterling tucked home his second of the night after a good delivery from Malo Gusto.

Sterling was once again involved as the Blues made it 3-0, his cross found Nicolas Jackson who prodded past Thomas Kaminski to get his Chelsea career off the mark.

Here is how Absolute Chelsea rated the players’ performance in their first win of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Robert Sanchez – 6/10

The Spaniard was relatively untroubled in this contest and there can be no real complaints over his performance. His only real involvement came from a deflected strike that he managed to keep out.

Axel Disasi – 7/10

It has been a mixed start to life at Chelsea for the French defender, while there was delight when he scored against Liverpool, his display against West Ham was not as impressive. Against Luton he held his own, while there were a couple of small errors he demonstrated his strength on a number of occasions. There is a lot of room still to grow in his game.

Thiago Silva – 7.5/10

The 38-year-old was classy as ever, he controlled the game from the back line as he usually does. His calmness and composure will no doubt help both Disasi and Colwill develop this season, he is the perfect role model to look to for defenders.

Levi Colwill – 7/10

Much like his Brazilian counterpart, the young English defender is a superb distributer of the ball, his long passes forward were inch-perfect. Comfortably the 20-year-olds best performance in a Chelsea shirt, the future is extremely bright.

Malo Gusto – 7.5/10

Constantly found himself in good positions down the right-hand side and linked up with Sterling well. He is proving himself to be a more than suitable replacement for the injured Reece James, a clean sheet and two assists, a very impressive performance.

Conor Gallagher – 6.5/10

Gallagher put in a very impressive display in Chelsea’s opening home game of the season against Liverpool, but was much quieter against Luton. There was not a great deal for him to do playing in the deeper role, but he did occasionally venture forward.

Enzo Fernandez – 8.5/10

It is hard to believe the Argentinian has not scored a goal for the Blues yet, a missed penalty last Sunday and against the Hatters he skimmed the bar and smacked the woodwork. As per usual though, his performance was one of great quality, extremely entertaining to watch in the middle of the park.

Moises Caicedo – 6.5/10

The £115 million man’s Chelsea career did not begin smoothly at the London Stadium last weekend and he still looked a tad shaky on his home debut. The Ecuadorian grew into the game as it progressed, showing Blues fans a mere glimpse of what he is truly capable of.

Ben Chilwell – 6/10 (86)

Chelsea’s captain in this contest has been playing in a very advanced position so far this season, but he was kept quiet in the first half. He also spurned a fantastic opportunity in the second half, opting to try and pass to Sterling rather than taking a shot in a one-on-one scenario.

Raheem Sterling – 9/10 (92)

A dazzling display in the opening 45 minutes against West Ham last Sunday saw the 28-year-old earn plenty of praise, he backed up that performance with another high quality outing against the Hatters. A wonderful dribble and calm finish just before the midway point in the first half gave Sterling his first goal of the season. In the second half he netted another, and also provided Jackson with a goal as well. After a disappointing debut season, Sterling will be hopeful he can continue to be the difference maker this season.

Nicolas Jackson – 8/10 (83)

The Senegalese forward is a fighter, with incredible determination and he was rewarded with his first goal in a Chelsea shirt against Luton. Jackson looks to be everything Chelsea fans have been screaming for up front, he’s powerful, fast, skilful and now he’s opened his goal scoring account with the Blues.
